The Portuguese Podengo Pequeno of the American Kennel Club’s Hound Group
is an ancient multi-sensory hound from Portugal. This breed comes in three sizes that are not interbred - small
(Pequeno), medium (Medio) and large (Grande), each size with two hair coats (smooth and wire coats) and their own
unique temperament. These pack hunters are also known as Podengo Portugues and Portuguese Warren Hound. The
Portuguese Podengo Pequeno entered the American Kennel Club’s Miscellaneous Class on the January 1, 2011. The
height of this breed is 8 to 12 inches at the Withers and they weigh between 9 and 13 pounds. They have a single
coat with no undercoat and the color of the coat ranges from white to chestnut but most are light brown in color.
They have a life expectancy of 17 years of age but some live longer. As with any animal, do your research before
